Griffith University will repay more than $8.34 million to 5,457 current and former staff after uncovering years of underpayments dating back to 2015.
Staff across six campuses were affected, including academics, admin, support staff, and casuals.
Some were underpaid by just a few dollars, others by tens of thousands.
Underpayment issues in universities aren’t new but this is one of the largest self-reports the sector has seen.
The university self-reported the issue in 2022 and identified the causes as:
- Manual and inconsistent payroll processes
- Poor onboarding practices
- Gaps in staff training
- Incomplete or inaccurate record-keeping
Griffith has now entered into an Enforceable Undertaking with the Fair Work Ombudsman, committing to:
- Full back payments
- Improved systems and processes
- Independent audits to ensure ongoing compliance
